Out of all the massive Showbiz celebrities lined up for the One World: Together at Home online concert, Christine + The Queen is the artist we were all waiting for, our lockdown gem, the lighthouse in the storm.
The One World: Together at Home global broadcast organised by the social movement Global Citizen, is a campaign raising funds to fight COVID-19 in support of frontline healthcare workers.
Christine + The Queens appears on the screen, during a windy Wednesday, and straight away begins her hypnotism. Her 80’s outfit, straight out of a Michael Jackson video, is a sign that the audience is in for a thriller.
She opens her session with a powerful version of her latest release “People, I’ve been sad” and I’m in owe. Her voice control skills are beyond human. In her minimal Parisian bedroom, she jumps around and dances but her voice does not tremble once. Even without any microphones, her voice resonates magnificently. It’s a whole sound, reaching deep, it fills the room. She moves from high to lower tones very naturally, making it look effortlessly.
My brain finally stopped thinking about the world outside and exclusively focused only on her performance. If the Together at Home concerts aim to bring good music and good time into people’s houses, Christine + The Queen definitely deserves an award for that.
The vintage sound and the disco beat come from her passion for the 80s. She is said to admire and being obsessed with Madonna and Michael Jackson. Her taste comes from her childhood spent in Nantes where her parents used to mix classical music and jazz with pop and rock.
Christine + The Queens mixes English with French. The results are interesting pieces where French music and English pop blend together creating harmonious, elegant and exotic sounds.
She is doing her third song and the comments popping up on the Instagram live screen have been only positive. Is it surprising? Not Really. It truly was the most natural and enjoyable performance of the entire selection of Instagram live.
Halfway through the performance, she sang Blinding Lights by The Weeknd. Her adaptability and versatility are shown in the first 30 seconds of the song. How can she do a cover of such a modern song and making it sounds like if she wrote and produced it? She is a stage chameleon.
The only thing that ruined her performance was her scarce internet connection. When she said bye, people begged to have more time from her. Luckily, she is blessing us with daily lives on her Instagram profile at 6 pm. And seriously I really want to thank her for that. It’s the best cure I have for lockdown blues.
