Say it with flower

Do you ever wonder why we buy roses for St. Valentine’s Day and lilies for funerals? Do you know that flowers speak their own language?

Herbs and flowers hide their own secret meanings and emotions. They are a silent dialogue between lovers, friends and strangers. In the past centuries, the language of flowers characterised not only mythology and folklore but also everyday communication.

Since ancient times in Greece, Rome, China and Egypt, flowers were used in art and literature to express emotions. Nearly all the feelings humanity experience can be associated to a flower.

This secret language became popular during the Victorian Era. People found it hard to share feelings with their loved ones due to the strict Victorian etiquette. Lovers had to find other way to express their forbidden love and passion so they used to exchange Tussie Mussies or Nosegays, small bouquets and wait for the response from their beloved.

So how can you say, “I love you to the Moon and back” or “I have a massive crush on you, I am aching” to your special half? We have your back.

Red roses are the classic lovers’ flowers. They stand for love and enduring passion. But be careful! The meaning behind gifting flower not only depends on the variety but also on colours and quantity. Buy a dozen of roses if you want to say, “Be mine” or gift one if you fell in love with that person at first sight.

A bouquet of carnations express love, distinction and fascination. Dark red carnations are for deep love and affection; white expresses good luck but also pure love; pink are to be gifted from a mother to their children to resemble her undying love for them.

For the ones with a burning desire, we recommend the Red Camellia. They represent that deep desire and love you have for someone, that feeling of holding somebody and never letting go.

Have you met the love of your life? Do you have butterflies flying everywhere? Do you feel lighter and euphoric? Then definitely send red tulips.

Frank Van der Wens, 52, owner of Impulse flowers on Holloway Road, said: “The best seller and perfect flower for Valentine’s Day is a tulip. And because we are a Dutch company and they all come from our hometown,” he said. They stand for perfect and true love, so they are perfect gift if you think you have found The One. Very romantic, isn’t it?

Dahlias represents the commitment between two people, a lasting bond between two souls. They are great for Valentine’s Day but also as an anniversary gift.

If the person of your dreams doesn’t know you are madly in love with them, send a bouquet of gardenias. They represent secret love and admiration.

Last but not least, Lady’s Mantle. A flower to show someone that you are here for him or her, no matter what. A symbol of friendship and comfort, hope and support.

You are all set up for your big date. Do not panic, relax and give yourself time to smell the flowers you’ve bought for your significant other, be confident and everything is going to be amazing. Do not worry and if the things go wrong you could always send petunias.
