After a few months trapped inside, people in desperate need of a makeover have decided to opt for DIY. ResearchandMarkets.com has reported that at-home hair colour kits have seen a 115% growth with companies like Revlon, Coty Inc and Garner experiencing higher demand.
Buyer beware: when desperation and boredom slide in, it’s very easy to commit terrible mistakes.
How to get a salon-quality colour at home? Au Naturel has done the research for you.
Rita Filippi, 20, hairdresser and hairstylist at Salone Renato says: “Store-bought dyeing kits are already prepared. We all have different hair, skin tones and sensitivity. You hairdresser knows your hair, therefore, knows the shades that will suit you best, so it’s very easy to get the wrong shade.”

Hundreds of brands and colours are online to choose from - so where to start? “People make the mistake to go for extreme colours like pink. Please don’t. You should do that at the salon,” says Rita.
“Try first a lighter or darker shade. Colouring hair is a complicated job and there is no space for mistakes.”
Rita recommends buying two boxes of the same colours, so you won’t risk running out during application. Before starting, it’s recommended to do a patch test and a strand test – and not only for allergies.

“This is very important,” says Rita, "You have to check if your hair reacts well with the formula.” If it doesn't you shouldn't apply the colour to avoid unwanted shades and irritation.
Here's how to do it. Before starting, make sure to apply lip balm along the hairlines to avoid dyeing your skin. Also, untangle your hair before starting for a smoother application, Rita says.
The secret to having salon colour at home is to do it like a hair colourist by applying the formula using a bowl and a brush and not spraying it directly on to your scalp. Do that starting from the top, brushing to the ends. Rinse with water and don’t shampoo straight away.
If you use a product with bleach the hair tends to become very dry and fragile. Rita says: “When bleach enters the hair, it bloats it and lifts the cuticles which protect the hair, so the final result is a more coarse and sensitive type of hair.”
It is very important to take care of your hair by using a professional conditioner and nutritive mask to the hair two or three times a week.
If you are unsure about using products with bleach Rita suggests to buy bleach-free kits: “These are really good for first handlers but also for people with a sensitive scalp, damaged hair and for clients with allergies.”

Another option is using henna, a natural colouring clay for those who want to slightly change their shades.
Fiorenza Sbabo, 55, owner of Sbabo Sisters hair salon in Valli del Pasubio, says to pay particular attention with henna. “It needs to be applied to clean and mostly dry hair. Also, due to the natural colours of henna, if you have lighter hair, you could turn orange.
Rita and Fiorenza agree that for best results you should always buy professional products. “It’s better to spend more than be sorry later and follow the instructions on the box, don’t improvise,” says Rita. Fiorenza continues: “If you have any questions, ask your hairdressers, we don’t have much to do at the moment, and we always have a chair for you.”
